 Green Gregory Vigo

Green Vigo was from the Western Cape and played rugby league for Wigan , Swinton and Oldham in England.

He was one of Wigans best players during his time and was a true character of the game, an excitement machine who had blistering pace and  a great ability to run around  opposite players .

He  was primarily a winger but also played centre and fullback when needed..

After starring for the Proteas in rugby union on their Uk tour in 1972 , he signed  with Wigan rugby league in 1973 .

He was the highest profile indigenous South African  rugby  union player of his time  to cross over to rugby  league

Vigo enjoyed an illustrious career at Wigan where he played   168 games, scoring 86 tries.

He was sold to Swinton in 1980  for  £15000 which at the time was a good payday for a league player in England.

Vigo  signed with  Oldham in 1982  and played up until  the end of the 1985 season where he played another 63 matches and scoring 20 tries.

In the 76/77 season he  mesmerised St Helens , scoring  7 tries in the  match.

He now spends his time between England and  the Western Cape ,South Africa. Whilst at Wigan he also represented the “Other Nationalities” rugby league team

In South Africa ,the Western Cape Rugby League has named their  club completion the Green Vigo Challenge cup in his honour

During a career in England that spanned over a decade ,  Green Vigo  became one of the best wingers to play the game in England
