GBCL 42-22 South Africa A [Match Report]

Great Britain community lions played their first match of their tour against a very physical South African A wining 42- 22.

With only two minutes on the clock a break from scrum half tony baker was backed up and finished off with a try for loose forward Gary Middlehurst.

Four minutes later Great Britain was on the score sheet again when a long pass from Baker found winger Joe Budd who touched down out wide.

On fifteen minutes a break from Paul Pendlebury was well backed up by winger Chris Walker who raced forty meters to score under the posts, Jordan Precious kicked the easy conversion attempt.

Eight minutes later South Africa was on the score sheet with a try from Dean Kramer when he dove over the try line from two metres out. Johan Fritz kicked the extra two points on offer.

A minute later Great Britain responded with a Gavin Corfield try after receiving a pass from full back Paul Pendlebury. Once again Jordan Precious kicked the conversion.

With only three minutes of the half remaining a lack of concentration allowed South Africa score arty through Christian Doziv to give a half time 20-10 advantage to Great Britain.

Five minutes into the second half South Africa scored another try when poor defence enabled Lucas Pruis to score by the posts, which he kicked his own conversion.

Two minutes later Great Britain responded with a Matty Bower try, who rounded the South African full back to score behind the posts; Tony Baker kicked the conversion attempt.

Four minutes later South Africa was on the score sheet again when winger Wayne Burger somehow managed to scramble over the line after what seemed a dubious movement, Dean Kramer kicked the conversion to bring South Africa within four points of Great Britain.

On sixty minutes Dave Dunwell went on a thirty metre sprint and at just the right moment passed inside to Anthony Atherton who scored under the posts, which gave Tony Baker the easiest of conversions.

Five minutes later quick hands along the Great Britain line of attack completely caught out the South African defence which gave winger Joe Budd the opportunity to score in the corner

In the dying seconds Great Britain secured victory with their final try of the match. A kick through by winger Chris Walker was fumbled by the South African full back first to react was Anthony Atherton who only had to ground the ball. Anthony Atherton also kicked the conversion.

Lions jet out for South African adventure

The Great Britain Community Lions Rugby League side have today set off on their three-game tour of South Africa.

The Lions left Manchester earlier this morning with Head Coach Jimmy Taylor looking forward to the tour which will be known as the ‘Tom Van Vollenhoven 75th Anniversary Tour.’

Taylor said: “We’re taking a 22-man squad with us and will be playing two games before the Test match against the South African Rhinos on Saturday July 31.

“In the first game our opponents will be wearing a replica of St Helens’ Wembley strip from the 1966 Challenge Cup final, whilst the next game will see us play in front of Tom Van Vollenhoven at the club of which he is now president.”

The squad includes Andrew Lake from Co-operative Rugby League Conference side St Albans Centurions, whilst the RAF also provide a squad member in hooker Jimmy Bardgett.

Skirlaugh contribute four members of the tour party in Steve Atkinson, Matty Bowers, Jordan Precious and captain Sean Wildbore and from the other side of the Pennines, Ince Rose Bridge of Wigan are represented through Tony Baker, Wayne Leyland and Scott Winstanley.

Commenting on his selections Taylor was keen to point out that it is not just the players’ ability on the field that helps sway his judgement on a player.

He said: “I make sure I don’t just pick people of how they play, I also only pick good lads off the field.

“It’s important when you’re away that everyone is going to get on well together and that’s a big part of the success of any tour.”

Garry Schofield makes surprise return to coaching with South Africa

Garry Schofield has finally found a way back into coaching, having been appointed by South Africa to lead their attempt to qualify for the next World Cup.

Schofield, the former Leeds and Great Britain stand-off and captain, impressed South African officials when coaching the British Amateur Rugby League Association's Young Lions team on a tour of the country last month. He will return to take up a new part-time role as South Africa's technical director later this week.

"I'm delighted to be back in the game I love," said Schofield. "Where better to start than South Africa? They're sleeping giants in rugby league, because they've got a lot of basic rugby talent but they lack specific rugby league nous, especially around the ruck."

League has a patchy history in South Africa, which has tended to produce the odd outstanding player – most famously the great St Helens wing Tom van Vollenhoven, who remains the president of the SARL – rather than top-class international teams.

They competed in the 1995 and 2000 World Cups led by a few players who had gained experience in England, notably Jamie Bloem. But they could not even afford to enter the qualifying process for the last World Cup in 2008, so Schofield's appointment is an encouraging sign of recovery.

"I think they've been quite energised by contact with the UK," said Niel Wood, the Rugby Football League's international development manager. "The game is played at club, provincial, student and junior level, and after putting out four sides against the Barla Young Lions, they have three more games against the Barla Community Lions coming up.

"Schoey got on well with them when he was out there and obviously they love the profile he could bring them. We're going to help him get qualified up to the necessary level for international coaching, and provide him with some extra support, and we'll see how it goes from there."

South Africa are likely to have to compete against the USA and Jamaica for one of the two places in the 14-team World Cup that will be hosted by the RFL in 2013, although it is still possible that they could be one of the 12 countries who receive an automatic invitation.

SOUTH AFRICAN SCHOOLS X111 - HEAVILY DEFEATED

The South African Schools lost by 78-0 - the highest score on the BARLA Juniors tour.
The SA Schools, ages 16-18 were outclassed in all aspects of the game against their older ages 19-20 opponents.
However they showed heart and played to the bitter end.

BARLA JUNIORS SCRAPED THROUGH – LUCKY WON AGAINST PRESIDENT X111
The BARLA Juniors experience helped them to victory – nothing else.
The President X111, based on invitation without a team  practise , missed a few opportunities to score including the conversion that robbed them from a draw.
For the first time on tour the BARLA Juniors battled to control the match.

Nevertheless the President X111 stood their man – a proud team at the end of the day.

See Vaal Weekblad  and report on the match.

South African Rugby League Under 21’s to meet the BARLA(British Amateur Rugby League Association)Juniors at Bosman Stadium.
The South African Rugby League National U/21 will be in action against the  BARLA Juniors (19 year + group) in the final match of the five match  Mixtec CC Development tour of South Africa on Saturday 5 June 2010.

The match will be played at the Bosman Stadium, Brakpan.

The unbeaten BARLA  Juniors refers to this match as the “Testmatch”of the tour  and they would most probably play against the toughest opposition encountered on the tour.
They have defeated the SARL Students in a hard fought battle in Pretoria and also handsomely defeated the South African Schools Development Side as well as the  South African Schools side( both 16/17/18 olds).

The tour was arranged to introduce Rugby League at Junior Levels (ages U/21) in South Africa- a development tour  to equip South African League for the future .
Rugby League is a fast growing sport in South Africa and the last time that South African Rugby League competed Internationally was in 2003 when the South African Rugby League Schools side toured Australia.

Prospects for the game : South African U/21 team will not be a pushover.

South African Rugby League need support for their team on Saturday. Come join us in singing the National Anthems.
